The main form of local transport on Erakor Lagoon, just five minutes to the south of Port Vila, is dougout canoe. Whether fishing, taking produce to market, or paddling to the “canoe park” beside an international resort; whatever the reason, life continues at an idyllic pace on this stunning inland waterway. So close to Port Vila town and harbour, yet a world away! Situated on the eastern side of Erakor Lagoon, where giant banyan trees and lush foliage grow down to the water’s edge, the villages of Ekasup and Erakor enjoy a timeless life…… The name “Erakor” means “The Place of the Fish Fence” and these are still in use. The Lagoon is also known as Ekasuvat, after Ekasup Village…... As we cruise the calm waters of Erakor Lagoon, the friendly crew on board JADE will explain the history and folklore of the area, and point out different types of wildlife we may encounter along the way: birds, fish and corals – and occasionally turtles and a visiting dugong. Our cruise takes us the full length of the lagoon. From the valuable real estate of Tassiriki, the waterway narrows before gushing into Emden or second Lagoon. The vista changes to take in some of the few remaining mangrove forests on Efate before we travel on past the tree fringed villages of Ekasup and Erakor to the Pacific Ocean, before returning via the town side, with it’s Resorts and waterfront residences. Although licensed for 40, we carry a maximum of 25 on scheduled cruises, to ensure a very personal experience.
