Although there is no formal public transport system in Vanuatu there is an effective system of buses, taxis and PT trucks.

These public transport methods may look a bit strange but it works effectively.

Public transport is identified by the number plate; you will find the following letters/code on number plates.

(T) Taxis

These are great if you have to go somewhere a bit out of the way or if you need to go directly to where you want. Prices vary depending on where you’re going it is best to confirm a price to the location you would like to travel to before you get in. if you are going to take a taxi it is also a good idea to have smaller notes as they can often not have change for large notes.

(B) Bus

Buses are mini vans they do not run on a bus route, you flag a bus down and tell the driver where you would like to go to and he will tell you if he is going that direction. Busses also have other passengers and will not always take the most direct route. The cost of a bus is 150Vt within the municipal area and 200Vt to surrounding areas.

(PT) Public Transport Truck

PT trucks are usually Ute’s or flatbed trucks that are used to transport goods around the islands. They are also used as passenger’s carriers to the villages around the islands. They may not be a comfortable ride but they can get you to places busses a taxi’s won’t.
